Beachbody Performance Review

The word that best describes my running life for this year is "RESET". My commitment to running is great, but my nutrition is another story. To start the resetting process, I am working on my normal nutrition as well as the products that I use to support my workouts and runs. Testing Beachbody Performance products (https://www.beachbody.com/#) was a great opportunity to try new items to prep for the Big Sur Marathon at the end of the month.

I tested the Beachbody Performance Energize, Recharge, Recover, and Hydrate formulas. All the formulas are dietary supplements that were designed by Harvard-trained scientists. They are formulated with plant-based ingredients and lack artificial ingredients, flavors, and preservatives. They are all low in calories, which is a plus!

Energize

The lemon flavored Energize formula was my least favorite product due to the flavor. I drank it before my 10 mile training run for the Publix Marathon. The product has caffeine and the run went well. Since I did not enjoy the flavor I only used it prior to that run.

Recharge

The vanilla flavored Recharge formula is designed for your take 30 minutes before going to sleep. I drank this formula after running the Publix Marathon. The flavor was fine. I had a bit of trouble with getting it all to dissolve in the water, but that was fine. I did wake up the next door feeling less sore than the previous day. Recharge may have helped with the healing and marathon recovery process.

Recover

The orange flavored Recover formula is designed to be taken within 30 minutes of your workout. I used it after an intense weight lifting session (my legs were sore the next day). I really like the flavor and it reminds me a bit of UCAN. This summer I plan on shifting my focus from running to strength training and plan on using this product on intense lifting days.

Hydrate

The Hydrate formulation by far was my favorite of the four products. I liked the citrus-flavored formula. I used it for my training runs, Publix Marathon, and Chick-fil-A Half Marathon. One thing I noticed after both races is that I did not "salt' as much as I normally do. Usually when run over 6 miles, I have tons of salt on my face and clothes. That was not the case after either race. I also like that product was not overly sweet and didn't make my teeth feel sticky during the run. It was my sole electrolyte product for the Chick-fil-A race and it worked great.

The Verdict

I really like the Hydrate formula and I plan to continue to use it for my summer training. I am planning to incorporate Recharge and Recover products for my summer weight lifting plan. I think using those products over the course of 3 months will give me more time to test their effectiveness. I will give Energize another try, but I think I will add fruit or juice to help with the flavor.
