Summer is in full effect in Georgia and every day the temperature is over 90 degrees. The humidity is crazy too. While it would be nice to take summer off, unfortunately that is not an option with marathon training in full effect. One of my struggles with the heat is hydration. I struggle when I run with water because I drink too much and then get cramps. Sports drinks are too sweet and make my teeth feel grimy after long distances. Other electrolyte hydration products are effective, but taste terrible unless they are mixed with sports drinks. Products with carbonation can irritate my stomach during long distances.
Ultima Replenisher (http://www.ultimareplenisher.com/) is a non-carbonated, zero calorie, and zero sugar electrolyte drink that I have been using to hydrate during this summer. It contains many vitamins and minerals, such as sodium and vitamin C. The product comes in a variety of flavors and I tested the lemonade and raspberry flavors for my evaluation. The product comes as powder that is mixed with 16 oz of water. The raspberry flavor was in single serving packets, while the lemonade was in a large container that came with a scoop.
Initially, I was skeptical of the product because I really dislike most electrolyte products because of their flavor. Ultima tastes great! Both flavors taste like a fruit juice, which makes me want to drink it during my runs. I used it during the Peachtree Road Race, which felt an inferno, and I felt good during and after the run. My teeth didn't feel coated or grimy like they usually do after drinking sports drinks.
The Verdict
I will be adding Ultima to my running products. I plan to order more flavors to test for NYC Marathon training. I may even make Ultima freezer pops for recovery.
