Blocking UV: The summer running chronicles continue

This has been one of the hottest summers that I have run through in a while. Still I run because taking a break means starting over when temperatures get better (whenever that may be). I will admit that I am a slacker when it comes to using UV protection for my eyes. Even though I have a few pairs of sunglasses, they never seem to make it to my runs. This summer, I had the opportunity to test the xx2i Australian1 polarized sunglasses to combat the high UV index in GA.

Product details

The Australian1 shades are stylish and have polarized lens that offer UV production. As an added bonus, the shades are available in prescription form for those who wear glasses. Unfortunately, my optical prescription exceeds the company's current offerings.

The glasses are packaged in a zipped hardshell case that has a foam that holds them in place. A soft carrying case and strap are also included. What's interesting about the shades is that they have an additional soft plastic insert that can be used for additional environmental protection (wind, etc) and can tighten the fit. The plastic insert was an interesting feature that have not seen in sunglasses.

Performance

I wore the sunglasses during my weekly runs in 90+ degree weather. The lens were the right degree of tint and not too dark. Dark tint is the main reason I do not like wearing sunglasses. They glasses did not slide off or move during my run. Since the only element I had to deal with during my runs was the intense heat, I didn't use the plastic insert. I will use the insert when I run the Big Sur Marathon next year.

Verdict

I plan to do better protecting my eyes this summer. I like the shades and I am leaving them in my car so I don't have excuse for not having them for runs. My eyes will thank me in the future.
