Running and listening to music is part of part of my normal routine. While I am careful in keeping my music at a low volume with my wired headphones, to listen to traffic and my surroundings, there is always room for improvement for safety. Aftershokz Trekz Air (www.aftershokz.com) bone conducting headphones are a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) marvel. Although this is my third pair of Aftershokz bone conduction headphones, I am still amazed by the technology. Aftershokz headphones uses the science of bone conduction to conduct sound through the bones in your head, which frees up your ears so you can hear your surroundings. As a runner being aware of our surroundings can be a matter of life and death.
I received the Canyon Red (love the color!) AfterShokz Trekz Air headphones to test. The headphones are packaged in a box with a USB cord, a zippered storage case, and ear plugs to completely block out sounds.
The AfterShokz Trekz Air is my third pair of AfterSkokz headphones, so was the third time a charm? Let's see...
Setting up the headphones
The headphones are ready to go out of the box and are easy to set up and sync to your mobile device. I paired the headphones with my Galaxy S6 and the syncing process took less than 5 minutes.
Sound
The sound quality is great for my music. I mostly listen to Zumba music during my runs and the songs sounded just as good as they do with my wired headphones. Even with all the great music I was still able to hear my surrounding environment. The call clarity with the headphones is also superb.
Controls and Notifications
The buttons to control the volume, stop/resume songs, and power off are also easy to manipulate. The headphones will verbally warn you when the batteries are low. The sweet voice says "Recharge Me" when it's time to find a plug The headphones will also go into sleep mode if they are on without being used for an extended time.
The Fit
I really like the fit of the headphones. I like that the band is thin and it does not touch my neck. The headphones are also very light. I think the fit is the best feature of the Trekz Air headphones. They were so lightweight that I didn't even notice that they were there.
Comparison to other AfterShokz Trekz Models
The Trekz Air completes my trio of Aftershokz Trekz headphones. A size of comparison of the original Trekz Titinium, Mini, and Air models are shown in the picture below. The Trekz Air and Mini are the same size, but the Airs have a thinner band. While all three models have great performance, the Trek Air headphones are my favorite. I like that the Trek Air headphones are lightweight and the band is does not touch my neck. They are all great headphones and I will wear any of the three for my runs.
The Verdict
The Aftershokz Trekz Air headphones are amazing and I will be definitely wearing them for my workouts. The thin headband is the best feature. I am glad to add it to my AfterShokz All Star Lineup.
